DIOCESAN SYNOD

TRAINING FOR THE MINISTRY DISCUSSION ADJOURNED Discussion on a resolution aimed at improving the recruitment and training of ministers was adjourned until to-day by the annual Synod of the Diocese of Christchurch yesterday. The resolution, which was moved by the Rev. D. M. Taylor, proposed the appointment of a Professor of Theology at College House and the raising of Theological Exhibitions to £l3O a year. The resolution also suggested that the Archbishop should consider approaches being made to headmasters of secondary schools so that Anglican boys could be addressed annually with a view to interesting them in the ministry, and that lhe principal of College House should keep district vocational guidance officers supplied with up-to-date information.

The resolution was the outcome of a report of the Synod committee on

the training and supply of ordinands. which said that the Church ul' England was not attracting enough firstclass men to her ministry, and was giving students inadequate education.

STIPENDS INCREASED

A bill increasing stipends in parochial districts from £325 to £360 was passed by the Synod of the Diocese of Christchurch last evening. In the past the standing committee has been making special grants to bring stipends up to £360, and the bill incorporated these grants as a permanent feature of the stipends. The bill also increased the minimum stipend for parishes to £4OO.
