LINCOLN COLLEGE BOARD
PROTEST ABOUT NEW REPRESENTATION A decision to write to the Minister of Education (Mr T. H. McCombs) protesting against the changed representation of agricultural and pastoral associations on the Lincoln College Board of Governors and drawing attention to the fact that the association had not been given reasonable notice of the change, was made by the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday, after it had heard a report by the secretary (Mr M. E. Lyons) on the changes in representation, made on the college board as a result of the passing of the Lincoln College Board Bill. Mr Lyons said that agricultural and pastoral associations in Canterbury had had three representatives on the board since 1887. but recently there had been a strong demand by Federated Farmers for representation. It had been agreed that there should be equal
representation. ' “In the welter of legislation at the end of the session, the Minister introduced a bill, which gives Federated Farmers three representatives and agricultural and pastoral associations in the South Island only one.” Mr Lyons added. There had been no intimation that the bill was coming down nor that the Education Committee was sitting. It had been reoorted to him that in the evidence given tn the committee bv the secretary nf Federated Farmers, it had been stated that agricultural and pastoral associations were not interested in advancing agriculture, but only in holding shows. “That is most regrettable.” Mr Lyons added. “Agricultural and pastoral associations have played a part in the development of agriculture, and are still prepared to nlav that nart.” On the motion of Mr R. S. Gunn, it was agreed to protest about the change.
