NO SKI-ING EVENTS AT EMPIRE GAMES
EXCLUSION EXPLAINED The New Zealand Olympic and Empire Games Association would not have any sport at the Empire Games which couid not be held in January and February. The association also wanted a sport with a potential gate. These reasons why skiing was excluded from the Empire Games programme were given by the president of the Ski Council of the Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand (Mr R. Syme) at the annual meeting on W. White (Stratford Mountain Club) criticised the council on the efforts it had made to have ski-ing accepted. The council had investigated the question of affiliation with the Olympic and Empire Games Association; but if it joined this body it would also be necessary to affiliate with the Federation Nationale de Ski, said Mr Syme. This would cost at least £l5 15s a year. Because there were no outstanding skiers in the countrv of world standard it was felt that this would be unwarranted. He was quite prepared to let the matter lapse, said Mr White after hearing the explanation. If a centennial meeting was held invitations to Canadian ana English skiers might fill the bill.
