CARGO HOLD UP IN GOODS SHED

Until the dispute over dirt money payments to Christchurch goods sheds railway workers for the handling of a cargo of bagged materials is settk J none of the bags will be handled by members of the Drivers’ Union. Two trucks of the cargo were handled yesterday by railwaymen, but the work was stopped when they were told that the dispute was not settled. The total cargo is of 2800 bags of mixed materials in 13 consignments. Short hold-ups in the handling at the goods sheds of consignments of cornflour and raw materials for rubber mills were reported yesterday. In both cases the discharge of the trucks was resumed when the Railways Department agreed to pay dirt money of 6d an hour. Negotiations between the A.S.R.S. and the Railway Department were proceeding yesterday. No advance on its offer to pay 6a an hour for work on the bagged material from the steamer Wellpark was made by the department up till the end of the day’s work in the shed.
