HAWKE CUP MATCH HUTT VALLEY BEATS TARANAKI (P.A.) WELLINGTON, February 28. A valuable innings of 97 by the veteran New Zealand representative, K. C. James, was largely responsible for Hutt Valley gaining an outright win by 80 runs in a match against Taranaki for the Hawke Cup. Hutt Valley retains the cup. James's eighth-wicket partnership with C. Muir added 102 runs to Hutt Valley’s score. Taranaki was left with three hours and a quarter in which to get 309 runs to win. The Taranaki batsmen forced the pace. Hutt Valley was without the services of its two main stock bowlers, Rudman and Robertson, both of whom were injured. A dashing second-wicket partnership between Betts and Meuli, which added 126 runs in 73 minutes, looked like snatching the game out of the fire for Taranaki, but after their dismissal the rest of their side was unable to carry on the fast scoring rate, in spite of the weakness of the attack. x Taranaki was all out 25 minutes before full time. Hutt Valley made 293 and 263 (C. James 97, Kemp 40, Muir 29 not out; Autridge took four wickets for 49, R. James three for 34, Meuli two for 41). Taranaki made 248 and 228 (Betts 68, Meuli 59, Autridge 19, Scott 17; Drylie took five wickets for 50).
