WEST COAST BULLER TOURNAMENT SPREYDON BEATEN IN FINAL From Our Own Reporter WESTPORT, February 25. The West Coast-Buller Women’s Bowling Centre's second annual tournament at Westport concluded yesterday when the final game of 21 heads was played on the Westport Returned Services’ Club green between a strong Westport R.S. four comprising Mesdames I. Reid (s), R._ Gough, M. Glenn, and C. Payne, and a team from the Spreydon Club, Christchurch, consisting of Mrs Hennessy (s), Misses M. and A. Crowley, and Mrs Philpott. The combined ages of the Spreydon team was more than 270 years, and this made them favourites with the spectators and players. In. the semi-final their victory by one shot over the Sydenham (Christchurch) four was one of the most popular of the tournament. In the final the strenuous play of the three previous days appeared to be having effect on the visiting four, and the Westport combination, maintaining their form which had carried them into the final without loss during the tournament, gradually increased their early lead to win 27-15. Occasional showers fell cluing play and the green was heavier than on any previous day. Results of post-sectional play were:— Mesdames I. Reid (s), R. Gough, M. Glenn, and C. Payne (Westport R.S.) beat Mesdames Knowles (s), Brown. Williams, and Watkin (Blackball), 17-9; Medsames Britten (s), Adcock, Boult, and Spearman (Syd.) beat Mesdames K. Mara (s), H. Sutherland, C. Piercey, and C. Ballantyne (Westport R.S.), 23-19; Mesdames Foreman (s), Hill, Gallagher, and Mills (Reefton) beat Mesdames L. Smith (s), I. Colvin, G. and I. Neill (Westport R.S.), 19-17; Mrs Hennessy, Misses M. and A. Crowley, and Mrs Philpott (Spreydon) beat Mesdames R. Longstaff, McEnaney, F. Manson, and Sheard, 26-12. Semi-finals.—Mrs Hennessy beat Mrs Britten, 18-17; Mrs Reid beat Mrs Foreman, 19-14. Final.—Mesdames Reid, Gough, Glenn, and Payne (Westport R.S.) 27, Mrs Henessy, Misses M. and A. Crowley, and Mrs Philpott (Spreydon) 15. The winning four won the championship of the centre’s tournament last year at Greymouth.
Yesterday afternoon the visiting bowlers were taken to Millerton for an outing and last night, at the Friendly Society’s Hall, they were entertained at a social and dance when the championship cup was presented.
