CAPTAIN HARDY AND CONCORD

PROMISING TROTTERS AT RANGIORA

Captain Hardy and Concord have both shown some ability to be placed in their recent races and they should be prominent in the trotting events at the Kaikoura Trotting Club’s meeting at Rangiora to-day.

An aged gelding, Captain Hardy, which races in the interests of his trainer, L. G. Grice, is by Nelson Derby from Mavis Wood, the dam of some good performers at both gaits. Captain Hardy has been placed in two of his three races this season, finishing fourth to Nydia, Silica, and Single Task in the second division of the Drayton Trot Handicap at the Methven Trotting Club’s meeting on Ocober 2. and second to Dictation in the Trotters’ Handicap at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on January 15. On that form. Captain Hardy may be best suited by the mile and five furlongs distance in the Stewards’ Handicap. A Quite Sure gelding. Concord has gained seven minor placings this season for his owner-trainer. H. J. Hewson, his ■last start yielding a second to Silica in tne Tasman Handicap of two miles at tne Nelson Trotting Club’s meeting on February 1. A repetition of that form should find Concord hard to beat over the same distance in the Keenan HandiA winner with a record of 3min 19 4-ssec to her credit at the trotting gait. Discord, the dam of Concord, is by the American-bred Wrack from a winner in the El Carbine mare. Echo, the dam of other good trotters in Resound, Tyrone Lass, Lament, and Sure Echo. Concord appears to be improving with racing and travelling experience. On recent form, he appears assured of earning some of the money at the Kaikoura Trotting Club’s meeting. Jottings Captain Sandy, Commander Scott. Bulls Eye. Battle On, and Caledonian Gold all pleased by the manner in which they worked at Epsom on Thursday morning. Captain Sandy, which finished a nose behind Attack in the Otahuhu Handicap last week, meets Attack on 36 yards better terms in the Alexandra Park Handicap to-day. At the difference in the handicaps, Captain Sandy should reverse placings with Attack. Golden Gamble, which is trained by W. E. Taylor, who races him in partnership with Messrs Stewart and Sharp is an aged gelding by Gamble from Nancy Bingen, the dam of winners in Gold Pot, Nancy Carbine, Pocket Book, Gold Case, and Empress Fay. Detour, which was trained for his races earlier in the season by A. Amyes, is now in J. Grice’s stable at Tinwald. Nel tod's Prospects One of the most improved novices on ihe Southland circuit is Neltod. which finished second to Cabot in the Balfour Handicap at the Gore Racing Club’s meeting. Neltod was giving the leaders about 12 lengths start with half a mile to go. but she finished fast to get within a neck of Cabot. On the score of blood she has a lot in her favour. She is a five-year-old Black Globe mare from Country Lady, by Sungod from Cardinal and Blue, by Copa de Oro from Lady Sybil, a daughter of a great producer in Thelma. This branch of the Thelma family has not had much chance, but it could quite easily be one of the most prolific. Copa de Oro. the sire of Cardinal and Blue, was the sire in America of Hey de Oro, a high-class sire in New Zealand. Copa de Oro’s stud career in New Zealand was a brief one, but the few mares that he left have bred on with marked success.

Brackets at Rangiora The following horses will be bracketed on the totalisator at the Kaikoura Trotting Club’s meeting at Rangiora to-day:— Second Hapuku Handicap: Sidi Omar and Highland Chief. Kaikoura Handicap: Ben’s Son and Mobile Globe. Black Diamond and Aqua Lady, Tekau and Waroonga. Kekerangu Handicap: Sir Gamble and Woolaway; Wrackdale. Canny Scott, and Ipso F3cto. Keenan Handicap: Cavan’s Guest and Super Sound, Concord and Sandhurst, Predicament and Steel Sword. Peninsula Handicap: Gallian. Scottish Greetings, Canny Scott, and Ipso Facto.

Stakes Candidates The two-year-olds, Lindy Lou, Mary Wootton, Gay Heritage, Pacing Perfection, Our Smith, Young Charles, Village King, and Harkaway, which are engaged in the Great Northern Trotting Stakes at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting to-day, worked together at Epsom on Thursday morning. Lindy Lou was the early pacemaker. At the end of a mile and a quarter in 2min 57sec, Young Charles shaded Mary Wootton and Lindy Lou with Gay Heritage and Our Smith close up. • At Springston

Barbecue, a place-getter when trained by F. G. Lynch last season, is now in M. W. Dickie’s team at Springston. A five-year-old mare. Barbecue is by Frillson (Gaillard—Frills) from Rosethorne, the dam of winners in Travis Thorne, - Thornworthy, Lord Axworthy, Colonel Axworthy, and Balalaika.

From a Good Family Cherry Malotte, which will race in the First Hapuku Handicap at the Kaikoura Trotting Club’s meeting at Rangiora today in the interests of Mr C. M. Archer, for whom she is trained at New Brighton by G. Cameron, is a three-year-old filly by Springfield Globe from Bingen’s Advice, which 16ft a winner in Jack Irviie to Jack Potts.

Bred by Mr G. Lancaster (Wellington). Bingen’s Advice is by Great Bingen from the Blue Mountain King mare. Free Advice, the dam of a family of winners including Horse Power, My Lady Luck. Pacing Power, and Free Again. Aerogard at Templeton Aerogard, which, was bought for 950 guineas by Mr G. R. Martin (Wellington) at the Red Band Lodge Stud dispersal sale at Invercargill recently, has been sent to Templeton to be trained by W. R. Butt, who educated her for her early races. Scratched The following horses have been scratched from their engagements at the Kaikoura Trotting Club’s meeting:-* Stewards’ Handicap: Cavan’s Guest: Keenan Handicap, Cavan’s Guest, Predicament, Steel Sword. Full of Merit Although Tutta Bella may have beaten him in any circumstances, Peccadillo’s placing at the Gore Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday was full of merit. Peccadillo was one of the worst to suffer when a driverless horse, Double Dillon, went Hack through the field with seven furlongs to run, and this cost him several lengths. Once he got a clear run. Peccadillo finished well to earn Second money. A winner over two miles at his first appearance this season, Peccadillo should race well at the Invercargill and Wyndham meetings next month. Timaru Trotting Club Nominations for the autumn meeting of the Timaru Trotting Club close on Monday next, the 28th inst., at 5 p.m.; also final forfeit, 14th Timaru Nursery Stakes. Advt.
