“POSITION IN MALAYA STILL SERIOUS"
BRITISH FORCES NOT TO BE REDUCED LONDON, February 28. Lord Listowel, Minister of State for Colonial Affairs, told the House of Lords yesterday that the total strength of the British forces'in Malaya would fiot be rerluced: The position in Malaya was still serious, but it was not worsening. Attacks by bandits had fallen from 278 in November to 198 in January. Murders of civilians had dropped from 48 a month from June to Decumber, to 31 in January. The Royal Air Force and the Navy had taken part in combined operations and there were signs that many bandit forces were unable to continue the fight in areas where they were formerly strong. It was officially announced in Kuala Lumpur yesterday that the security forces had killed 468 terrorists since terrorism began on June 10. 1948. A total of 343 others had been captured, of whom 35 had been hanged. Terrorists in the same period killed 348 civilians—24o Chinese, 63 Malays, 25 Europeans, 18 Indians, and 10 others. Sixty-seven regular and 88 special and auxiliary police were killed in the same period.
