SUPERANNUATION FOR M.P.'S

Sir,—The fact that Mr Coleman, M.P., alone is retiring on superannuation is beside the point. The Government rushed through legislation providing £250 a year after nine years’ service, rising to £ 400 a year after 15 years, and at age 50, thus securing politicians against defeat. Mr Nash could see ho difficulties about this, yet insults superannuitants’ intelligence by asking them .to believe their situation differs from that of salary and wage earners. He knows perfectly well their rises were given because the £ 1 has dropped heavily in value. No wonder the position of many superannuitants has fallen below the age beneficiary’s, and after double the service at which M.P.’s qualify for £4OO a year. The National Party forced Mr Nash, after quibbling for years, to admit the injustice of penalising married superannuitants and their wives. He still owes many of these three years’ bonus.—Yours, etc., SUPERANNUITANT.
