SUBSIDY ON WOOL
Sir,—ls it true that wool purchased in New Zealand for local use is subsidised out of the Consolidated Fund? Dame Rumour says that wool sold recently in New Zealand at Bld per lb was subsidised by over 40d per lb out of the Consolidated Fund. Is it true? Please define the position, for our politicians avoid doing so—Yours, etc., TAXPAYER. February 7, 1949. [The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr A. iH. Nordmeyer) writes as follows: “From 1942 to the 1945-46 wool season local mills received their wool at approximately 1941-42 appraisal prices. When auctions were resumed for the 1946-47 season and wool prices increased, thd Government decided as part of its stabilisation policy to avoid increases in the price of local woollen goods. The payment of a subsidy is much cheaper than an allround increase in prices.”]
