CIVIC CENTRE
Sir, —If we have sufficient people with vision in and around Christchurch, we shall have our Town Hall, and we should have it on the best site possible. Undoubtedly the difficulties which now confront us are considerable; but will they be less in 10 or 20 years? The following lines from Goethe seem to be applicable: "Are you in earnest? Seize this very minute; What you can do, or dream you .can, begin it; Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it; Only engage, and then the mind grows heated; Begin, and thus the work will be completed.” —Yours, etc., ADVANCE CHRISTCHURCH. February 24, 1949.
Sir, —The decision of the City Council is, I am sure, welcome to the citizens. The choice of site is also sensible, being so central. The only objection, so far as this writer can see, is the presence of those pylons at the back; in heavy weather I understand they vibrate. But it would be better to shift them rather than dissociate the City Council and its offices from a Town Hall. It is already a civic centre. The ground floor of a building can easily be raised if necessary.— Yours, etc., NATIVE BORN. February 24, 1949.
