ROAD TRANSPORT LICENCES
EXTENSION ALLOWED BY DEPARTMENT
SHORTAGE OF WAGGONS IN SOUTH CANTERBURY From Our Own Reporter WAIMATE, February 23.
Because of the widespread demand for railway waggons as a result of the early harvest and the congestion at Timaru, where waggons are believed to be accumulating while awaiting unloading, permission has been given by the Transport Department’s Waimate inspector (Mr R. Hughes) to make extensions to the licences of road transport operators in the district as far north as Pareora to permit them to carry grain to Oamaru. This will apply.in cases where railage cannot be undertaken.
Representations were made by Mr Hughes to the Transport Department. Dunedin, after conferring with Mr G. Barclay, president of the Waimate Federated Farmers, transport operators. and others interested.
The local demand for waggons is exemplified bv the requirements of 90 by one transport firm to serve the Stud holme-Willowbridge-Morven area in the next 10 days. The position at Timaru is said to be acute and Timaru is definitely closed to grain consignments. It is believed that scores of waggons are on the sidings at Timaru, where a wheat ship is loading.
