ROAD MAINTENANCE
“MOTORIST CANNOT MEET HIGHER TAXATION”. (P.A.) AUCKLAND. February 23. “If all taxation from petrol were set apart for the purpose for which it is levied there would be ample money for building and maintaining roads,” said Mr F. G. Farrell, president of the Automobile Association (Auckland), when commenting on the forecast by the chief engineer of the Main Highways Board 'Mr F. M. H. Hanson) that road users would be called on to pay more for roads. Mr Farrell said he could not see how the private motorist could meet higher taxation. “On every gallon of petrol he pays taxation of 14.7 d. in addition to tv re tax in the form of duty.” he said. “Of that amount less than 6d goes to the roads.”
