AGE BENEFIT

Sir,—My mother receives the age benefit. She is 76, and cannot live alone: therefore she boards the local school teacher. The arrangement on both sides is an excellent one; but, as the Social Security Department will only allow my mother to receive 25s a week for board and lodging, if she charges any more her benefit is reduced. This rule was fixed-years ago, when the cost of living was 100 par cent, lower than to-day. Consequently she finds it very difficult to make both ends meet at the present cost of living. So whichever way she acts she is a decided loser. I think this restriction grossly unfair. I think the National Party will make living conditions fairer for the aged.—Yours, etc., NEMO.
