PURGE IN CZECH AIR FORCE
REPORTS RECEIVED IN VIENNA
(Rec. 8.20 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 21. “Reports reaching Vienna indicate that the Czech air force is undergoing a political purge which is, if anything, more severe than that being simultaneously applied to the army,” says the Vienna correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph.” “As with the army, emphasis is being laid on ‘Western’ officers and men who served with the British and United States forces during the war. It is estimated that the air force in 1945 contained about 400 officers who trained and served with the Royal Air Force, but to-day there are only about 50 on the active list. The others have fled to the west, been dismissed, or been put on ‘sick leave.’ The only ‘Western’ officers left are those professing to be enthusiastic Communists.”
