ATHLETICS

JUNIORS AND WOMEN TWO N.Z. RECORDS BROKEN The best performance of the Canterbury junior and women’s athletic championships held at Rugby Park on Saturday was the convincing win by G. M. Cox in the 440yds in 50.9 sec, just beating the New Zealand record of 51sec, held jointly by A. F. Dockery (Canterbury), and R. E. Penrose (Auckland). Included in a first-class field was the brilliant young St. Bede’s College sprinter, R F. Warren, who covered his first 220yds in about 23.55ec, and at this stage held a four yard advantage on Cox. Running outside Warren Cox forced the pace round the final bend and lack of training told its tale on Warren. Cox finished strongly, with D. Fergusson (Canterbury Club) coming up to take second place several yards back. R. V. Nicoll (Canterbury Club) had a comfortable win in the 880yds, and came in several seconds clear of his club mate, J. R. Phipps, in 2min o.9sec, time just outside the provincial record. Cox, last year’s champion, concentrated on the quarter, and scratched from the half mile. His absence robbed the race of considerable interest, as a keen tussle had been expected between the pair. Nicoll covered his first lap in 58sec. 660yds in Imin 29sec. and the last 220yds in 32sec. With the competition he wiU have at the New Zealand championships, NicoH should considerably improve his time for the final lap. In the junior 880yds relay, run in stages of 220, 110, 110 and 440yds, the Canterbury Club, with a well-balanced combination in W. J. Landery, D. Hamilton, D. Fergusson, and J. Phipps, succeeded in lowering the New Zealand record by The previous record of lmin 42.45ec was set by a Canterbury provincial team in 1945.

Last year’s champion, W. Newton (South Canterbury), with a fine throw of 160 ft Ilin, retained his javelin title and established a new Canterbury record. The junior long jump was keenly contested, and only half an inch separated the first two competitors, D. J. Kelly (Greymouth), and M. B. Pope (Marist). K. Beardsley (Technical) won both the sprints, with another promising runner, R. Gaskell (Crichton Cobbers) in second place each time. In the 220yds GaskeH started fast but with half the distance covered Beardsley drew level and came away to win in ,4sec outside the New Zealand record of 22.45ec. P. Towart (Canterbury University College) dead-heated for first place in the women’s 100yds with J. Shaw (South Canterbury), and won the 22Gyds without being extended in 26.1 sec, only jsec outside the New Zealand record. J. Shaw also won the 75yds. An improvement was shown in the women s shot put standard. Two competitors, G. M. Gray (South Canterbury), and M. Benson (Teachers’ Training College), recorded more than 27ft, as against last E®"® throw of 26ft 92in. The title-holder. Miss K. Gray, had to be content with third place. The events in the under 17 grade were keenly contested and resulted in some reaUy good .performances. In a close fin(Crichton Cobbers) won the 100yds from B. Stringer (Ashburton). a P d w ,£■ Landery (Canterbury Club) in Usee. This event, held in the morning, was run nto a strong easterly wind. W. J. Landery took the 220yds from B. Thwaites in 23.8 sec, time that would do credit to many of the province’s more .mature athletes. The inter-club competition resulted in o l or Technical, with 15 points, with South Canterbury, 13 points, second and Crichton Cobbers, 11 points, third In the women’s section South Canterbury, with 20J points, took first place, seven points clear of Canterbury University College. Technical, 10 points, was
