DEFENCE PLANS IN CANADA
NEEDS OF MILITARY FORCES
INTENSIVE SURVEY BEING MADE (N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) (Rec. 9.20 p.m.) OTTAWA, Nov. 22. The Canadian Defence Minister (Mr Brooke Claxton) said to-day that Canada was making an intensive inventory to determine just what her fighting forces would need for a year of war. Mr Claxton said that the stockpiling of war materials as determined by the inventory would be undertaken as soon as materials, jnanpower, and plants were available. He said that Canada already had: (1) Created a defence commitments authority to permit the military authorities to let defence contracts without awaiting Parliamentary approval. The authority so far had placed contracts exceeding 29,000,000 dollars. (2) Spent 25,000,000 dollars on new aircraft. (3) Let a 10,000,000-dollar contract for refitting and modernising 200 Royal Canadian Air Force aeroplanes. (4) Spent over 6,000,000 dollars on jet-engine research and. experimental construction. (5) Placed large orders for new motorised army equipment. (6) Prepared extensive contracts for ships, including vessels such as antisubmarine craft.
