CIVIL DEFENCE IN AUSTRALIA

ORGANISATION TO BE ESTABLISHED

(Rec. 9 p.m.) CANBERRA, Nov. 23, The Australian Minister of Defence (Mr J. J. Dedman) announced that the Cabinet had approved the establishment of a civil defence planning organisation in Australia. The main feature would be that the Interior Department would be responsible for civil defence, but the Defence Department would be responsible for advice on military aspects. There would be a Civil Defence Committee consisting of senior departmental representatives to advise on policy and co-ordinate plans. A full-time Director of Civil Defence, responsible for the initial planning, would be appointed.
