SCHOOLS’ MATCH

CRICKET

CHRISTCHURCH BEATS TIMARU • Christchurch Boys’ High School beat Tiinaru Boys’ High School by 160 runs in the annual cricket match, which ended at the Straven road ground yesterday. Timaru finished the first day 64 runs behind, each side having completed one iilnings. Yesterday the Christchurch batsmen were eager for runs and in. the circumstances the innings played by D. Wilson, who scored 61, was excellent. He began by playing firm strokes and, once established, an effective left-hander’s pull brought him many runs. He lost his wicket through his anxiety to score quickly but he did his side good service. Penrose, played some accomplished strokes, and Duckmanton and Ditfort, in a ninth wicket partnership, added 52 runs in half an hour after lunch, allowing an early declaration. Of the bowlers, Bradley was perhAps the steadiest, and in trying conditions, he kept a good length during a spell of bowling which lasted an hour and a half. Webber’s leg breaks were also effective at times, although Wilson took heavy toll of some loose ones. Jeffery took three cheap wickets, and the fielding, except for the dropping of two catches, was good. Timaru needed 271 runs to win, and made an indifferent start, which later became a collapse. Bowden played some good cricket and Jeffery was again in form, but the later batsmen showed little resolution in what was a discouraging situation. The Christchurch captain, M. B. Poore, who had made a century in the first innings, bowled splendidly to take six wickets. He maintained a very good length, swinging the ball late and sometimes spinning it back from the off. Early in the afternoon the pitch began to take spin and Poore was too much for most of the batsmen. The Timaru total was only 109, and the match ended 70 minutes before the scheduled time. Greatbatch, a leg spinner, threw the ball well up but seemed a little too fond of bowling his faster ball. The umpires were Messrs C. Barnes and F. Rix. Scores:—
