KILLING IS SUICIDE

Sir,—ln a letter to this column last week I argued that from an ethical point of view the most effective defence against being killed is not to kill. Here I should like to stress the fact that in actual fact we pay very little need to this precept, killing and preparing to kill not only our fellows but also our weaker brethren in the one world family of life, the plants and animals, with the most ruthless efficiency. The material wealth of our own Dominion rests largely on animal killings (1,000,000 pigs, 1,500.000 cattle, 4.000.000 sheep, 10,000.000 lambs, 2000.000 rabbits, yearly). So if we are killed ourselves in the imminent World War No. 3 we but receive what we gave. The old saying, “With what measure you measure, it will be measured to you,” appears to have been really, inspired.—Yours, etc., N. M. BELL. September 23, 1948.
