Mr L. G. Amos and Mrs Amos (Merivale) will visit Dunedin this week, when Mr Amos will attend a conference of power supply authorities.

The Women’s Christian Temperance Union at the final session of its annual provincial convention yesterday reelected its North Canterbury district officers as follows:—president, Mrs E. R. Clark; vice-president, Mrs M. Griffiths; secretary, Mrs R. Black; treasurer, Mrs E. Atkins. Mrs H. Densem was re-elected president, and Miss P. Tooley was re-elected secretary of the South Canterbury district. The vicepresident and treasurer will be elected later. The plan of work for the year was drafted, and in the afternoon an interesting address on “The Laws of the Bible” was given by Mrs C. L. Crowley.

Mesdames M. and R. Redpath, who have been associated with the Christchurch Competitions Society for 45 years, were made life members of the society at the annual meeting last evening. Several members spoke appreciatively of the work they had done for the society.

Members of the Canterbury Women's Club were entertained in their clubroom last evening by their guests, members of the Ashburton Cavendish Club, who presented two entertaining plays. Mrs G. H. Watts (president) was assisted in receiving the guests by Mrs W. R. Ryburn, president of the Cavendish Club. The first play, “The Lovely Miracle,” by Philip Johnson, was produced by Miss I. Chamberlain, the principal roles being played by Mrs H. N. Armstrong (mother), R. Bruce (daughter), C. Parsons (neighbour), and R. Orr (young man). Gertrude Smith was producer for the second play, a rearrangement of “Maritana,” the principal parts being taken by Barbara Paterson (Maritana), Gertrude Smith (Don Caesar), Honor Brown (Don Jose), Rima Haymes (Lazarello), Peggy Parson (captain). Members of the music circle of the Cavendish Club formed the chorus of gypsies and citizens. The pianists were Madeline MacKeig and Patricia Gibson, and Mrs Helen Milligan was violinist. Sister E. E. M. Simmers, senior tutor sister at the Napier Public Hospital, has been appointed matron of the Hawera Hospital. There were 3000 different varieties of carnations. The flower was known to exist as far back as 1463, as there was a picture extant of King Edward IV with a red carnation in his buttonhole, said Dr. T. Fletcher Telford when he gave a talk on carnations and lilies to members of the Riccarton Garden Club. The meeting was held in the Farmers’ tearooms, the hostesses being Mesdames R. A. Ambridge, W. Arnott, E. G. Bonniface, N. S. Cramond, G. Cowie, W. McCullough, S. J. Thomas, and Miss M. Powell. The president, Mrs R. T. Tosswill, welcomed and introduced Dr. Fletcher Telford. There were many entries in the various competitions, results being as follows: decorative section: A class, Mrs C. G. •Manhire 1, Mrs J. East 2, Mrs F. A. Wagner 3; B class, Mrs W. Tomlinson 1, Mrs E. Hammond 2, Mrs S. D. Denton 3. Cut flowers: A class, Mrs H. B. Duckworth 1, Mrs R. S. Kent 2, Miss S. Rainey 3; B class, Mrs A. D. Harris 1, Mrs W. Tomlinson 2, Mrs J. East 3. Most outstanding exhibit: Mrs C. G. Manhire. A few weeks ago the lady editor of “The Press” appealed to readers for two warm dressing gowns and some umbrellas for patients in hospital. As usual, the appeal has received a generous response, dressing gowns having been received with much gratitude from Mrs Young and Mrs W. D. Johnston, and umbrellas from Miss A. Bowker, Mrs A. M. Munroe (Walton street), Mrs A. W. Beaven, and an anonymous friend. The lady editor also gratefully acknowledges receipt of reading matter for patients in hospital from several friends, and stamps rrom L.C.

A “musical evening,” arranged by Mrs H. Grant, was enjoyed by members of the Catholic Women’s League recently at “Maryknoll.” Songs were sung by Mrs E. Hill. Miss Grace Totkington. and Miss Helen Hodgins, who with Mrs A. Ayling. “The Melody Four,” also sang three delightful songs. They were accompanied by Mrs J. C. Cullman. Humorous recitations were given by Miss Noeline MeAleer. and piano solos and duets were played bv Mrs H. Grant and Mis Monica McLachlan. Appreciation o the programme was expressed by Mis H. Nottingham.

The monthly meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers was held in the Y.M.C.A. building, with Mrs Templeton presiding. A collection was made to purchase food for a gift parcel to be sent to England. Mrs G. Rountree was the guest sneaker, and songs were sung by Miss Napper. Competition winners were Mesdames Chapman, Denham. Brownlee, Mason, Cottam. and Parrish. Miss Eileen Kane, a teacher of ballroom dancing in Brisbane, has arrived in Wellington to conduct examinations for the Federal Association of Teachers of Dancing. Iced or Uniced Fruit Cakes for overseas ordered in the coming week at Ethne’s. Hereford Court, or the Ethne Tosswill Cake Shop, 123 Cashel st.. will be posted without delay, to arrive by Christmas, if possible. Advt.
