OBITUARY
MRS MARY ELIZABETH SIMPSON Mrs Mary Elizabeth Simpson, who died in Christchurch, was widely kaown for her humanitarian work, which had its beginning in 1895, when she became a member of the Canterbury Women’s Institute, which did social reform work, and played a leading role in securing the franchise for women in this coutnry. Mrs Simpson pioneered the establishment of the Christian Science faith in New Zealand. In 1913 she was a student at the Massachusetts Metaphysical College. Boston, and was appointed the first New Zealand teacher of Christian Science.
Withdrawing from the Christian Science movement 23 years ago. Mrs Simnson founded the Divine Science Institute, of which she was the active head until her death. Possessing outstanding gifts as a public speaker and author, she lectured in America. Australia, and throughout the Dominion.
