TRAVEL CLUB

Mr S. E. Field, a New Zealander, who spent many years in Malaya as an income tax inspector for the British Government, was the guest speaker at a meeting of the Travel Club held at the D.I.C. yesterday morning. Mr Field described life in the town of Kuala Lumpur, a town as large as Christchurch, a visit to the lovely island of Penang, with its snake temple and its enormous Buddhist temple, and to the tiny island of Pangkor, off the coast of Perak, one of the beauty spots of Malgya, where the Government had built a rest home for its officials.

The dire effects of black magic in Malaya were explained by Mr Field, whq enlivened his address by relating many anecdotes, and he gave an interesting account of a trip he had made through the jungle, guided by pygmies, to the Cameron Highlands, 4000 feet above sea level, where the climate is mild and where Europeans spend many holidays.

The singer at the meeting was Miss Margaret Hamilton, who was accompanied by Mrs W. E. Olds, and Mesdames A. M. Vile and R. T. Tosswill were hostesses. Mr C. G. McKellar presided.
