SUNLIGHT LEAGUE

ANNUAL REPORT “The weighty responsibility of Birch Hill and Okuku Station, has naturally been the Sunlight League’s chief preoccupation during the year under review,” says the annual report of the league. “The farm management committee is most wisely implementing a longterm policy. All income for the present goes back into the improvement of the land and fencing, and expenditure is only on essentials. High prices for wool are partly offset by the high ■wages bill. The men’s quarters at Okuku have been put in first-class order.” Mention is made of the fact that death duties on the Ford-Millton Memorial home bequest were heavy and efforts to obtain relief in this regard had so far been unavailing. Much repair work yrgs also necessary. A happy ajranfemeSnUfiatf Be&i made between Heritage (Incorporated) and the Sunlight League, the report continues. Heritage selects children to be sent to the Ford-Millton home during the school holidays and bears the cost which is kept as low as possible. In the autumn, 12 girls between the ages of eight and 12 years, spent a happy holiday at the home, and in the spring camp 14 boys had a most enjoyable time. Picnics and sports were arranged and films screened at both cajnps. The Sunlight* Leaguers- housing committee, it fs announced?- is preparing a brochure of htuse plans. These show that it is possible to admit the sun into every room of a house irrespective of the aspect of the section on which the house is built. It is intended to send these brochures to every builder, every branch of the Plunket Society, and to places where young people are employed throughout New Zealand. It is felt that correct planning for health is as important as correct construction.

Among gifts gratefully acknowledged in the report are a photograph of Lord Rutherford with his grandchildren, given by Lady Rutherford, and light cricket bats, one from Mr Arthur Sims and one from Mr D. Reese. Many residents in town and country are thanked for help given.
