MR M. J. FARRELL’S SUCCESS'

FORMER MANAGER AT BARRY’S BAY

In his first season as manager o£ the Tisbifry dairy factory in Southland Mr M. J- Farrell has score 4 the highest average grading marks in New Zealand for cheese. Tisbury’s average during the season ended July 31 was 93.154, its highest grading 94.5, and its lowest 92. Of the factory’s output 68 per cent, was graded as finest. Dast year Tisbury was forty-first in a grading list covering 42 factories, with an average of 914020. Before going to Tisbury Mr Farrell was manager of the Barry’s Bay factory and last year be won the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s cup for the highest average grade at Lyttelton. He also won the Otago Harbour Board’s trophy at the Dunedin winter show for the highest average grade from November 1 to April 30. Finest cheese, on which a premium is paid, is that graded 93 and over, and in turning out 68 per cent, of his factory’s output as finest Mr Farrell was responsible for an outstanding achievement. Last season'the percentage of finest for the whole of Southland was 39. The improvement at Tisbury is attributed to the up-to-date machinery installed and to the methods of cheesemaking employed. . Since coming to New Zealand from Ireland 30 years ago Mr Farrell has been employed at several cheese factories, chiefly in Southland. He was first employed at the Balfour dairy factory, and later he went to the North Island where he remained for three years before accepting an assistant’s position at Wright’s Bush. From there he went to Wyndham, from where he was appointed manager at Tokanui. Four years later he became manager at Titiroa, where he spent six years, and during that time won no fewer than 48 prizes for cheese exhibits. The next move was to Barry’s Bay, where he stayed for two years, and last year he went to Tisbury.
