ENGINEERING INQUIRY

0 EVIDENCE TAKEN IN CHRISTCHURCH

Inquiries into engineering training were opened in Christchurch yesterday by the Consul iative Committee on the Training of Professional Engineers, which was established recently by the Minister of Education (Mr T. H. McCombs).

Members of the committee were welcomed to Canterbury University College yesterday morning by the chairman of the college council (Sir Joseph Ward) and the rector (Professor A. H. Tocker). The committee then heard evidence by Mr C. Hamann, chairman of the engineering sub-com-mittee of the college council, on the training now being given at the college engineering school, and on its future funct’ons.

The committee then inspected some of the engineering laboratories at the college before hearing evidence by Mr S. R. Siemon, senior lecturer in ch'iriical engineering at the college, and secretary of the New Zealand Institute of Chemical Engineers. Evidence was also submitted on behalf of the students’ Engineering Society at Canterbury College, and by Mr R. A. Campbell, a consulting engineer, and a former senior member of the staff of thr> Engineering School. Professor G. G. Calvert, professor of r ? vi! engineering and d**an of the Engineering Faculty in Christchurch (who is a member of the consultative committee). Professor N. M. MacElwee. nrofp«;sor of electrical engineering, and Mr H. F. T. Adams, senior lecturer in aeronautical engineering, supolied information to tho committee during its investigations. The committee made a inspection of laboratories at Canterbury College late in the afternoon.
