DEMOBILISATION IN BRITAIN

POSSIBLE “FREEZING” CONSIDERED LONDON, August 31. “Official Government quarters deny that the British Cabinet has decided to slow down demobilisation,” says Reuter’s . political correspondent. “Official sources indicated that the Cabinet Was reviewing the position, but it is common knowledge that the Government has considered freezing demobilisation should the Berlin and Malayan situations become worse. “Parliamentary circles believe the problem must be settled soon because unless demobilisation is checked the armed services will lose 100,000 men next January under the new National Service Act, which reduces compulsory service to only one year. The Government needs every available worker to restore economic stability. Therefore, it is reluctant to freeze demobilisation and would take the step only if defence interests rendered it imperative.”
