NATIONALISATION OF COAL
REPLY TO MR MCLAGAN (P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 22. “If the Government subsidies are taken into account, the cost of coal a ton at the pithead has probably more than doubled since the coalmining industry was nationalised,” the president of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce (Mr J. F. Johnston) said to-day. He described the statement by the Minister of Mines (Mr A.McLagan). in the Westport Coal Company Bill debate in Parliament on Tuesday, that private enterprise broke down in the operation of the mining industry, as most unreasonable and unfair. “If allowance is made for the extra cost to the State of non-availability of sufficient coal for railways and electric power services and. industry generally, * nationalisation of the coal industry will be one of the most costly and unsuccessful experiments in the history of nationalisation,” Mr Johnston added.
