ACCIDENTS
BABY DROWNED RUBBISH HOLE FILLED WITH WATER (P.A.X . WHANGAREI, July 22. Barrie Keith Maddock, aged 17 months, son of a settler at Lake Ohia, near Kaitaia, was drowned when he fell into a rubbish hole filled with rainwater near his parents’ home. The children of neighbours reported seeing the body lying in three feet of water. Artificial respiration was applied unsuccessfully. EXPLOSION IN DRUM TWO MEN SUFFER BURNS Two men suffered burns and shock when an explosion occurred while they were painting a 50-gallon drum with a rubber solution at the factory of the Guild Rubber Company, Ltd., in Vagues road, at 10 45 a.m. yesterday. They were Jack Howard, aged 31, of 78 Stanmore road, and William Hayes, aged 34, of 809 Main road, Belfast. They were taken by St. John Ambulance and admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital. Mr Howard, who was inside the drum, suffered burns to the arms and hands, and he was scorched about the head and neck. Mr Hayes did not suffer such extensive injuries, although he was scorched about the head. The men were both reported to be in a satisfactory condition last evening. PEDESTRIAN INJURED Head injuries were suffered by an elderly woman, Mrs Matilda Coleu, of 5 London street, Richmond, when she was struck by a motor-van while crossing Colombo street yesterday morning. She was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital at 11.15 o’clock. Her condition was reported to be satisfactory last evening.
