STATUE FALLS ON WORKMEN
NEITHER SERIOUSLY INJURED
ACCIDENT IN ALBERT PARK
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 22. Two Auckland City Council workmen, S. Balmain and C. Lendrum, narrowly escaped serious injury when a heavy metal statue at the top of the ornamental fountain in Albert Park fell on them to-day. Both received shock and bruises. Mr Balmain was treated at the Auckland Hospital casualty department and Mr Lendrum at the St. John Ambulance station.
The men were starting to spraypaint the fountain when the accident happened. They were working close to the fountain, the pond of which was recently drained, when a Grecian castiron figure, about four feet high and weighing about two hundredweight, fell from its base. It passed between them and struck each a glancing blow as it fell.
The statue, which originally came from England, has been in the park for about 60 years. The metal had become corroded at the base but there was no indication that it was unsafe. The head and an arm of the figure were broken off by the fall, and it appeared to be beyond repair. It took three men to lift the figure to remove it.
