MAGISTRATE’S COURT

MONDAY (Before Mr F. F. Reid, S.M.) CHARGE OF FAILING TO STOP Frantz Bonisch Garlick, a seedsman, aged 36, of Wellington, was remanded to August 2 on a charge that, on July 18, at Christchurch, being the driver of a motor-car, apd, an accident arising either directly or indirectly from the use of the car having occurred to Robert William Hodgson, he failed to stop. Asking that bail be granted, Mr D. W. Russell, who appeared for Garlick, said the accused was going to the North Island to-day (Tuesday). He was a man of good reputation and had reported voluntarily to the police. Garlick was granted bail in his own recognisance of £5O and one surety of £5O, a condition being that he report weekly to the police. ATTEMPT TO OBTAIN DRUG Lyall Hillier Sumpter, a labourer, aged 45, pleaded guilty to a charge of attempting to obtain a dangerous drug, cadenine, when he was not a person lawfully entitled to procure it. Mr A. B. Hobbs, who appeared for Sumpter, said the accused suffered from arthritis. He could have had the drug prescribed by a doctor and no wrongful use of the drug was intended. Sumpter was fined £5. CHARGES OF RECEIVING Francis Joseph McGrath, a labourer, aged 26, who was represented bv Mr H. W. Thompson, appeared for sentence on four charges of receiving stolen property. He was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour on the first charge, and one month’s imprisonment with hard labour on each of the other three charges, the sentences to be concurrent. BREACH OF PROBATION Colin Alister Bayne, a labourer, aged 29, was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment with hard labour on a charge of a breach of the terms of his probation. SHIP DESERTION James Michael Ludlow, a ship’s fireman, aged 24, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour on a charge of deserting the overseas ship Corinthic at Wellington on July 10, 1947. OFFENSIVE BEHAVIOUR Neil Hadyn McDonald, a carrier, who had pleaded guilty to a charge of behaving in an offensive manner in Harewood road, was fined £5. Mr E. A. Lee appeared for the accused. THEFT OF ELECTRIC JUG Morris Colin Gilbert, a labourer, aged 19, was fined. £5 when he appeared for sentence on a charge of stealing one electric jug, valued at £1 10s, the property of Gordon Pickard Shammen. An order was made for the return of the jug. REMANDED James St. Clair Williamson, aged 44, a collector, who appeared on a charge ot stealing £5O in money, the property of Stonex Brothers, Ltd., Auckland, was remanded to appear in the Magistrate’s Court at Auckland on July 26.
