ICE SKATING
N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS AT * LAKE TEKAPO From Our Own Reporter TIMARU, July 17. Considering that competitors had not had many opportunities for practice, a high standard of skating was seen at the Lake Tekapo ice skating rink to-day. when about 40 persons from as far afield as Wellington and Otago took part In the New Zealand ice skating championships. About 200 persons saw the events. Results were:— Figure Skating.—Women: Mrs Gllkinson (Otago) 1, Miss S. Grigg (Tekapo) 2, Miss S. Buchanan (Tekapo) 3. Men: T. Grigg (Windwhistle) 1. B. Tuffnell (Wellington) 2. Dancing.—Women: Mrs Gilkinson and Tuffnell 1, Miss Trott and Butter 2. Speed.—Men’s mile and a half: R. Smith (Mount Harper) 1, D. Cassie (Tekapo) 2, R. Blair (Dunedin) 3. 880 Yards: D. Cassie 1, R. Smith 2. 220 Yards: R. Blair 1. N. Weir (Oturehua) 2, D. Cassie 3. Women’s 880 yards: Mrs Gllkinson 1, Miss Grigg 2, Miss Buchanan 3. 220 yards: Miss Bucnanan 1, Mrs Gilkinson 2. Miss P. Barker (Tekapo) 3. Pairs Freestyle Skating.—Mrs Gilkinson and Tuffnell 1. The judges were Miss Olive and Mr J. Ryan, of Australia, and Mr R. Hoskin, of Tekapo. At the conclusion of the pionships the president of the Tekapo Ice Skating Club (Mrs Hunter-Weston) presented the trophies and the president of the New Zealand Ice Skating Association (Mr R. J. Loughnan) thanked the owners of the rink for its use for the event.
