SOUTH CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORD BROKEN BY 57 SECONDS In winning the senior title in the South Canterbury cross country championships, held at the Scenic Reserve at Timaru on Saturday, C. Johns covered the six miles and a quarter course in 39min 56sec, a time which is 57sec better than that registered by J. R. Clarke over the course at the Canterbury championships last year. After Johns, who is a member of the Timaru Harrier Club, came: A. Browm (Presbyterian), 40min 14 4-ssec, 2; L. Johns (Timaru), 40min 30 2-ssec, 3; T. Myers (Presbyterian), 40min 56 3-ssec, 4. In the teams’ race for the Orr Walker Cup placings were: Timaru (15 points) 1, Presbyterian 2, Methodist 3. The junior event also produced a surprise in the defeat of A. Dellow, who was a member of the Canterbury junior team for the New Zealand championships last year. First home over the distance of about three miles and one-eighth was W. Ramsay (Presbyterian) In 19min 30 2-ssec, followed by A. Delloav (Timaru), 19min 49 2-ssec, C. Thomas (Methodist) 20min 14 3-ssec.
