CO-OPERATIVE SHOPS MAKE CUTS

LONDON. March 19. The National Co-operative Societies’ Authority meeting approved a sweeping price cut in foodstuffs from May 26, in response to Sir Stafford Cripps's appeal to lower prices. Reductions recommended to co-oper-ative societies inchide the 341 b loaf of bread by Id, butter by 2d, margar* ine by Id, bacon and cheese by 2d, and sugar by Id per lb. The authority decided to ask the Minister of Food (Mr John Strachry) to redraft meat prices, so that every housewife may have the same meat for less money. The authority also decided to apr preach the Board of Trade to secure a general reduction in the prices of clothing,, footwear, furniture, hamware, and domestic textiles. The co-operative societies’ cuts will save housewives £8,000,000 annually, according to an estimate based on rationing registrations with 1100 co-op-erative shops. They will benefit 10,000,000 members.
