TINWALD EWE FAIR

EXCELLENT SHOWING OF TWO TOOTHS

FINE-WOOLLED SHEEP MAKE 61/-

Once again the season’s highest price for fine-woolled- ewes has been securea at the Ashburton County Breeders fair at Tinwald, where 61s was paid for a pen of halfbreds yesterday. In another respect the fair was outstanding, and that was in the high quality of the very large offering of two-tooths. Otherwise it was a disappointing fixture, with values for all classes of sheep below those of the Meth ven fair on Friday. The Tinwald offering ,is confined to sheep from the Ashburton County, but as the county contains almost every quality of land to be found in Canterbury from hard high country to heavy plains land, the selection of breeds is wide. Quality varies widely, too, but in the main, yesterday’s entry was of good class. Not many station lines were forward, but a number of annual drafts from plains properties were included. In recent years the Tinwald fair has attracted an increasingly good selection of two-tooths, and of the total offering of 31,000 more than 12,000 were twotooths. A number of breeders now produce special lines of two-tooths for the fair, and these, with the excellent standard of most of the lines from the plains properties, made yesterday’s display of two-tooths outstanding for the Canterbury series of fairs. The offering was not notable for its size alone, but for the excellent quality of the sheep. Many lines showed every evidence of careful breeding and preparation for sale, and almost without exception they were in excellent condition.

The older ewes were not as impressive. Many of them were cast lines from farmers, low in the mouth, and obvipusly old. The few station lines looked very well by comparison. Most of the sheep were in good condition, and some of them were very forward. It required four hours to sell out the two-tootbb. and from the beginning it was obvious that the demand was not as keen as it has been, and was less keen than 'at Methven. Possibly because of the large selection before them, buyers were hesitant, and frequently only two buyers were interested in the one'line. Prices were established early on a basis about 2s to 2s 6d below Methven, and remained fairly steady on that basis, though there were many instances of ewes selling both well above and well below the average. The advantage throughout the day \ was with fine-woolled ewes, which sold very well where the wool was finest. Openwoolled ewes w’ere never dear.

Among the aged ewes, the demand was sound at good prices for the few finewoolled station lines, but the others met a steady market at about freezing rates for ewes with a lot of condition, and about Addington rates for others. Buyers were .much more interested in fine-wool-led sheep than in, open-woolled. Prices were about 3s beMw Methven for the better sheep. Top price for the fair, and top price for fine-woolled ewes so far this season. Was 61s, paid for an excellent line of first cross Romney-Merino• two>4ooths from R. Buick (Winchmore), who has had the distinction of topping the fair on a number of occasions. His ewes last year made 525, which stood as the season’s record for fine-woolled ewes. A line of 210 two-tooth Corriedales from J. H. Grigg (Longbeach), well grown and carrying big fleeces, made 495. J. Davidson (Maronan) sol<* % pen of 89 Romney .cross at 475. A. W. Taylor (Springfield) put up an excellent performance with his Romneys. He sold 420 in six lots, and real -ed 44s 6d to 46s for them. H. T. Crothers (Laurlston) sold a line of 119 Romney-Corrie-dale three-quarterbreds at 465. L. P. Chapman (Inverary) topped the four-year section with the sale of 220 halfbreds at 355. Inverary ewes were equal top last year with. Surrey Hills ewes at 365. The 340 Surrey Hills ewes this year made 32s 6d. K. Ballantyne (Gawler Downs) sold 216 three-quarterbreds at 33s and 31s 6d was paid for a line of 383 halfbreds from the Mount Somers Estate. Among the aged ewes Hood Bros. (Mount Somers) received 32s 6d for 150 four and five-year halfbreds, D. Mackintosh (Cannington) sold 89 Romneys at 30s, and the top cut of the Longbeach s.m. ewes made 295.
