PREMIERSHIP OF TASMANIA

CAUCUS RE ELECTS MR COSGROVE

NO-CONFIDENCE MOTION BY OPPOSITION (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10.30 p.m.) HOBART, Feb. 25. To give the Tasmanian Labour Government stronger leadership in its defence against the Opposition’s noconfidence motion in the House of Assembly to-night, Mr Robert Cosgrove, who was acquitted last week of charges of bribery, was re-elected Premier at a caucus meeting this morning. As soon as the caucus rose the interim Premier (Mr Edward Brooker) hurried to Government House, tendered his resignation and the resignation of his Cabinet, and recommended that the Governor (Sir Hugh Binney) send for Mr Cosgrove. The Leader of the Opposition (Mt N. Carppbell) moved the Opposition’s no-confidence motion last night. It alleges misuse by the Government of its secret party fund. Mr Cosgrove said: “It is a foregone conclusion that the motion will fail.” Before Mr Campbell gave notice of his motion, an Independent member moved for a Royal Commission 1o inquire into the funds of all political parties in Tasmania.
