DAMAGE BY VANDALS
—* — VALUABLE BOOKS DESTROYED ENTRY FORCED INTO COUNCIL CHAMBERS Valuable books were destroyed and damage was caused in the council chambers in the fire-damaged block of the municipal buildings at Greymouth recently. Referring to the matter at a meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr F. Boustridge) said that vandals had forced an entry into the building, and had even pulled down the canopies around the Mayoral chair. Vandalism was going on in the reserve, gardens, and in the borough buildings, he said, and it was the duty of ratepayers to endeavour to check it. TMtey wanted to see the town improved, and not defaced as was now happening. It was stated by the engineer (Mr A. J. Fairmaid) that it was apparent that the boys responsible for the damage in the municipal building had had a fight with the books in the library room. He was unable to find how the vandals got into the building. Other councillors referred to examples of vandalism in the borough, special mention being made of the damage to trees in Heaphy street by youths climbing into the young shrubs.
