GREY VALLEY WATER SUPPLY

£230,000 SCHEME PROPOSED PIPE LINE TO RUN THROUGH DISTRICT A provisional scheme for the reticulation of the Grey Valley with a water supply scheme was placed before the Greymouth Borough Council at its monthly meeting by the Mayor, Mr F. F. Boustridge. This followed a talk Mr Boustridge had had with the Prime Minister (Mr P. Fraser) on the occasion of his recent visit to Greymouth. The proposal embraces the Greymouth borough and various other areas of the Grey Valley. It was indicated that the total outlay would be about £230,000. The Prime Minister, said Mr Boustridge, had advised him that Blackball and Brunner needed a water supply. The time was therefore opportune to revise Greymouth’s scheme, since, with the supplying of water to the township in the upper Grey river sewage would empty into the Grey. It was time to discuss a plan which would include the three areas in ques- ‘ tion, and not leave three separate schemes, said Mr Boustridge. The piping line would travel the length of the Grey Valley and provide for expansion and further settlement of the area. It would also ensure an ample supply of water for irrigation and general purposes. It had been indicated by Mr Fraser that the scheme would be a Government-installed one. It was certainly for the development of the West Coast. The source of the scheme would be the Blackball creek where there was plenty of water all the year round. A conference would shortly be held which would be attended b/ representatives of the various district local bodies concerned. The amourit that the borough would be required to raise for the scheme would be £50,000, the Grey County Council about £40,000, and the Brunner Borough Council, about £40,000. This left a margin or about £lOO,OOO in the estimated cost of £230,000, and in this, the Government would be called upon for assistance. The Mayor, and Crs G. R. Harker and H. Hutchinson were appointed the council’s representatives at the conference.
