BRITISH PROTEST UNANSWERED

Syrian Attacks On Palestine JEWS MOVE TO FRONTIER (N.Z.P.A.—Reuter—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, January 12. “No answer has yet been received from Syria t© the British representations made after Friday’s attacks across the Syrian border,’’ says the Jerusalem correspondent of “The Times.” • “The raiders have returned to Syria. Their entry in Palestine was perhaps a precipitate step by a local leader, because it has been generally accepted that the Arabs wish to bide their time until the British have left Palestine. “The resolute British answer to the raid has impressed the Jews, which is saying a great deal. ‘‘The Syrian Prime Minister (Jamal Mardam Bey) is reported as saying: ‘We in Syria are doing our duty completely. The world will soon see the Arabs rise as one man.’ “The safety in the months to come of Jerusalem and its nationals is a matter of deep concern. British officials cling to the hope that something may be arranged to safeguard Jerusalem after they have gone.” The Haganah has sent reinforcements to the Syrian frontier, and strong forces of Arabs are massed along the Syrian side of the border, according to reports from Palestine. Snipers have renewed their attacks on Jewish settlements near Dan, the scene of. the attack by Arabs from Syria on Friday. British troops again went to the settlers’ assistance. A Reuter correspondent, in a message from “Arab guerrilla mountain headquarters,” says that a Palestinian Arab guerrilla army, which is undergoing intensive training in the mountains near Samaria and Galilee, will be ready to go into action in a month. The “Bridge of Jacob’s Daughters” over the Jordan on the PalestineSyrian frontier was blown up last night. Haganah forces are believed.to have been responsible. The bridge is in the area where the Arabs attacked from Syria on Friday. It carries the only road linking Syria and Palestine across the Jordan. Fifty thousand Persians yesterday demonstrated in Teheran, crying “Down with the Jews,” and “We want, a holy war.” A British soldier playing football in a camp on the outskirts of Jerusalem was seriously wounded by a stray bullet from a Jewish-Arab clash in an adjacent suburb. Three Britons, former officers in the Indian Army, left London by air yesterday to fight for the Arabs in Palestine. The officers would not disclose their identities. They said that the Arab Office in London had received many applications and it was likely that other officers and men would leave Britain for the Middle East. BRITISH-IRAQI TREATY DETAILS RELEASED IN BAGDAD TWO BASES GIVEN UP BAGDAD, January 11. The Acting-Prime Minister of Iraq (Jamal Baban) has announced that under the British-Iraqi treaty, which replaces the treaty of 1930, the agreements for the administration of the Iraqi State Railways and the port of Basra have been abolished, and the British bases at Habbaniyah and Shaibah handed over to Iraq. The Nationalist Parliamentary Constitutional Front, in a statement, says that the old and new treaties are basically identical, “especially regarding co-operation in defence, military guidance, and the training of the Iraqi Army, which the nation opposes.” Most of the Iraqi newspapers strongly criticise "the treaty.

The Wyatt Earp.—The leak in the hull of the Wyatt Earp was not the reason for her return from the Antarctic, said the Minister of the Navy (Mr W. J. Riordan). The main reason was the subsidence of the timber supports under new engines fitted in Adelaide.—Canberra. January 12.
