KETTLE MEMORIAL TO HERE HINE RECORD TOTALISATOR TURNOVER From Our Own Reporter GREYMOUTH, January 11. The Greymouth Jockey Club broke all previous records for totalisator turnover on the concluding day of its summer meeting at Omoto yesterday. The day was fine and sunny and the track in fast order. There were a large attendance, keen racing, and several good finishes. The totalisator handled £23,176 10s, as against £■ 13,83 a on the second day last year representing an increase of £9341 10s. The previous best figures for any one day were fW.IH on January 1. 1946. The total for the meeting, £41,839, was also a record, exceeding the total of £28,141 10s handled last year by £13,697 10s. McCarthy has recommissioned the two-year-old Sequoia, which had been out for a spell for a few’ weeks. Sequoia has come in very big in condition, and has also developed a good deal. An attractive Chestnut colt showing a fair amount of white. Sequoia is a half-brother to Desert Fox, and is by Neptune from Oragon, by Tiderace from Oreum, by King John from Desert Gold. He was bred by Mr T. C. Lowry, and bought at the yearling sales last January by Mr N. H. Barlow for 1300 guineas. To Attend Yearling Sales To attend the yearling sales at Trentham, a veteran buyer, Mr C. Wheeler, ? Adelaide. Mr C. Ewington, of Sydney, eneehorse owner and businessman, and T. J. Smith, also of Sydney, who is the youngest trainer there holding a No. 1 training licence, arrived in Auckland in the Mating Phoenix yesterday. Mr Wheeler, who is 82 years old, commenting briefly on the Gaming Commission’s report, said that the double totalisator • “was a big thing in Adelaide, and .very popular.” Mr Ewing said he was impressed with the racing system in New Zealand, and ®dded that “there was a swing towards the totalisator in Sydney.’’— (P.A.)
