WAIMAKARIRI RIVER

Sir, —Mr C. T. Williams may be correct in his explanation of the title of Waimakariri river in Kaiapoi; if so, it is time the Lands Department, or other authoritative body, altered the title officially. The Waimakariri river, as generally known, does not flow through or near the centre of the borough. The Cam river, which flows past the woollen mill, Js joined just below the*mill by a stream which today carries water from the Main drain. The main body of water, therefore, flowing under the Kaiapoi bridge is derived from the Cam. The title of the Kaiapoi river is an anomaly which should be clarified by officially naming it the “Cam, ’ or the. “Kaiapoi,” or some other. To have two bridges on the same highway, both allegedly spanning the same river, is little short of ridiculous.—Yours, etc.. KAIAPOI RESIDENT. Kaiapoi, January 9, 1948.
