FIRE FIGHTING IN WAIMAIRI

TRIAL SUMPS TO BE PREPARED Consideration was being given to a report from the Fire Brigade Superintendent (Mr A. Morrison), outlining the suggested positions of sumps and notices in connexion with fire prevention in the Fendalton area, said the report of the works committee presented at a meeting of the Waimairi County Council last evening. The committee had arranged to have trial sumps prepared. The scheme had been held up because supplies of pipes, which had to be specially made, had not been received. said the acting-engineer (Mr R. A. Macfarlane).

On the motion of Cr. Kitson, it was agreed to pay an account for street lighting for 12 months to the M.E.D. The matter of completing the transfer of the electrical undertaking and the street lighting arrangements was left to Cr. Kitson and the County Clerk (Mr H. A. Ferguson) to discuss with the general manager of the M.E.D. (Mr E. Hitchcock), on the recommendation of the finance committee.

Forty-eight building permits, valued at £40.168, were issued last month, compared with 56 permits, valued at £53,061. for the corresponding period last year, said the report of the building inspector. A petition from 24 residents of Papanui asked the council to negotiate with the Christchurch Drainage Board for the piping of a drain on the northern side of Sawyers Arms road, because it was dangerous especially to children, and a menace to health in summer.

The drain and footpath were in a shocking state, said the chairman, Mr W. W. Laing. It was agreed to send the petition to the Drainage Board, with the council’s recommendation that action be taken. Restrictions on Bridge Until a new bridge is erected the council, acting on a recommendation of the works committee decided to place notices at the Marshland road bridge over the Styx river, fixing a speed restriction of 10 miles an hour and making it a one-way bridge. It was reported that test bores for the new structure had been completed, and the results had been satisfactory. “The bridge is not in good order, and we are doing in the interests of public safety.” said the chairman, replying to a suggestion that the speed limit of 10 miles an hour was a bit low and would slow up traffic considerably during busy periods. Construction of a new bridge would be undertaken when sanction was received. he said.
