WORLD’S SUGAR SUPPLIES

PRODUCTION EXCEEDS CONSUMPTION

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 10. The International Sugar Council has announced that world sugar production in the year ended August 31, 1947, exceeded consumption by 1.Q78.000 metric tons. The excess had been added to world stocks, and some of it had been allocated to the International Food Council for shipment before the end of 1947. The statement said that only 500,000 tons of the excess would be left by the end of 1947, mainly because United States consumption during the calendar year would increase by 1,100,000 tons and world production by only 600,000 tons. The council emphasised that many countries had not the purchasing power to buy all the sugar they needed to bring consumption to the pre-war level. World consumption during the year was 3,500,000 metric tons less than in 1938-39.
