FIVE LABOUR SEATS

TWO WOMEN NOW ON COUNCIL ONE SITTING MEMBER DEFEATED All except one of the Citizens’ Association sitting councillors retained their seats in the City Council election. The defeated candidate was Mr W. B. Owen. Labour increased its representation on the council by four seats, the new councillors including a formei Mayor. Mr R. M. M-cfarlane, M.P., and Mr J. Mathison, M.P The sole Labour representative on the last council, Mr G. Manning, filled second place to Mr J. L. Hay, who topped the poll for the second time, with 23.661 votes. Mr Manning gained 21.405. Three votes behind him was Mr L. G Amos, who was elected as a new Citizens’ Association candidate in 1944. There will be two women on the new council. Miss Mary McLean was fourth on the list, w ith 21.043 votes, and a Labour candidate. Mrs T. Green, was elected with 19,670 votes. The fifth Labour councillor is Mr T. H Butterfield, who obtained 18,907 votes. New’ Citizens’ Association councillors will be Mr P. S. Turnbull, who obtained 17.930 votes, and Mr W. J. Cowles, who polled 17.560. There is a difference of only 39 votes between Mr F. L. Brandt, the last candidate elected, end Mr L. Christie, who obtained most votes among those unsuccessful. The three candidates outside the two main organisations received little support. Mr F. Whiley (Independent) obtained more .votes than the two Communist candidates. Messrs J. G. Locke and H. G. A. Ostler The present figures indicate that the three candidates wiP not lose their deposits, because they secured more than one-eighth of the votes polled by the lowest successful candidate. Polling was higher than at the previous election, the first four candidates gaining more than 20 000 votes each.
