CHRISTCHURCH MAYORALTY

MR ANDREWS AGAIN SUCCESSFUL By scoring a majority over the combined votes of his two opponents, Mr E. H. Andrews entered his third term as Mayor of Christchurch. On the preliminary count, he had a lead of 5589 over Mr D. Barnes (Labour), Mr M. E. Lyons, the retiring'' deputymayor, who stood as an Independent, polling only 4790 votes in a total poll of more than 41,000. In a bigger poll than in 1944, Mr Andrews scored about 1800 fewer votes and the Labour candidate about 1600 fewer votes. From an early stage in the counting of the votes it became apparent that Mr Andrews would be returned, as he was polling well in sections of the city considered to be Labour strongholds and had commanding majorities in all other districts. At the North Linwood public school, only one vote separated Mr Andrews and Mr Barnes. Mr Lyons failed to gain a majority over his opponents at any booth. Although the first return, from Monck’s Bay. was received by the returning- officer (Mr H. S. Feast) at 7.10 p.m., some small booths were slow in telephoning their results, and it was 10.45 p.m. before Mr Feast could announce the preliminary result.
