SALVAGE OF TIMBER
NINE MILLERS IN SELWYN PLANTATIONS
With the addition of two more operators there would be nine millers handling the Selwyn Plantation Board’s timber with a potential output of at least 1,000,000 superficial feet a month, reported the superintendent (Mr E. A. Cooney) to a meeting of the board this week. So far the quantity of logs rejected because of rot or borer has been infinitesimal, the report stated, but from now on it was almost certain to increase. Every endeavour had been made to concentrate as many millers as possible on the mature timber to keep losses to a minimum. Every million superficial feet lost meant £2OOO to the board, and the risk of fire, should the summer be a dry one. should not be lost sight of. Should the operators be able to continue, by the end of next year there should not be more than 4,000.000 superficial feet left to salvage. For the first six months of this financial year production from the board’s reserves amounted to 3,593.762 superficial feet and royalty to £7542, compared with 2,129.456 superficial feet and £4389 for the same period last year.
