14 OF ATHENIC CREW MISSING
FIVE GIVE THEMSELVES UP TO POLICE
(P.A.) DUNEDIN, October 29. When the Athenic sailed for Britain from Wellington last Saturday 14 of the crew were missing. Yesterday five of these men gave themselves up to the police and to-day Mr J. D. Willis, S.M., sentenced them to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour each for deserting ship. One of the men, according to the police, said he had failed to gain a place in the immigration scheme and considered that deserting ship was a “fair way of getting into New Zealand.” Counsel for the shipping company said that desertions were now reaching mass proportions.
