“UN-BRITISH” INQUIRY SUGGESTED
LAUGHTER in house of COMMONS (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, October 29. Amid laughter, Mr Herbert Morrison. Lord President of the Council, replied, “No, sir,” to a question in the House of Commons by Sir Waldron Smithers (Conservative, Orpington) whether the Government would set up a committee of the House to investigate “un-British activities,” on the same lines as the committee now sitting in the United States investigating un-American activities. When Sir Waldron Smithers asked whether the Government would also introduce a bill to outlaw Communists, Mr Morrison, amid further laughter. again replied. “No. sir.” “It seems to me that the political parties can best take care of the Communists.” added Mr Morrison. “We are not afraid of them, and I don’t see why the honourable member should be.”
