N.Z. WOOL DAMAGED BY THAMES FIRE
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, October 29. A spokesman for the United Kingdom and Dominions Wool Disposal Organisation said that 50 per cent, of the 18,000 bales of New Zealand wool stored under tarpaulins at the Thames wharf, Barking, were damaged or affected to some extent by a fire at the wharf. Some would be a total loss, though it would be several days before a full assessment of the damage could be made. The wool, which is valued at between £BOO.OOO and £900,000, is fully covered by insurance. Some of it has been in store for two years. It is not yet established whether the fire originated in the wool dump or spread to the wool from the adjacent Government rubber dump.
