COMBINED CLUBS BEATEN BY WORKSHOPS FINAL MATCH OF SEASON The final match of the season was played at English Park on Saturday when a senior Addington Workshops eleven beat a combined clubs’ side by four goals to three. For so late in the season some attractive football was seen. The positional play and passing at times reached a very high standard, quite up to representative .class. At other times play deteriorated, but this was mainly the fault or individual players. This/was clearly shown in the movements of both left flanks. The combined side was hardly a satisfactory selection although a little more weight was carried when Lucas returned to his customary position at inside left during the second spell. The Workshops left flank also wasted opportunities, but this was overeagerness on the part of the left wfqg man. Furlong, with more control of the ball, would rapidly rise out of the class he is in at present. These weaknesses on the left were well compensated for on the light where both combinations were in top form as attacking units. G. McAnulty and G. McMenamin for Workshops, and D. Head and J. McLennan for Combined, all made the most of the opportunities that came their way. Head has a particularly good goal-scoring record this season in club football, and on Saturday proved that in good company he is right in representative class. Both Head and McAnulty should be seriously considered as inside men in next season’s representative side. With play veering to the flanks neither centre had much to do at the finish, but both, particularly Cullen, wasted little time in following in a' sally down the centre. Accurate positional play and crisp passes by the intermediates paved the way for the forward movements and in this department the work of the Workshops men was more telling, as they played together much better. Here the value of A. Sutherland was clearly shown, and with his flank men and inside forwards interlocking, he at times dominated midfield play. V Smith, his opposite number, began as a third back but left this position to fill up the mid-field gap. Neither of his outside men worked in tvith him, preferring to transfer outright to their immediate flanks. Both defences came in for a fair measure of work and, like the goalkeepers, were invariably sound. The game might have been more interesting if the Workshops eleven had played a genuine colts side. If nothing else it would have served as a stocktaking of the junior tqlent in the senior ranks. Goals were scored for Workshops by R. Cullen (2) and by G. McAnulty (2). D. Head (3) scored for the Combined eleven. Referee, Mr L. Tointon. TROPHY WINNERS TYophy winners for the season are:— Seniors.—Hurley Shield Championship: Western. English Cup Knockout: Technical I.
